In case you haven’t heard, there was a $ 1MM buy in tournament at the World Series of Poker this year. This hand came up on day one, in the fourth blind level. The participants were businessman John Morgan and Russian businessman and frequent poker player Mikhail Smirnov. From poker forum 2+2:
At around 5 p.m. Local time during the fourth blind level, Galfond was present to see his table mate in the $1 million buy-in WSOP event, Russian semi-pro Mikhail Smirnov, fold quads on the river to an all-in bet. According to Smirnov, the action started with Tom Dwan opening to 32,000. According to Smirnov, the action started with Tom Dwan opening to 32,000. Smirnov called from the small blind with the 88, and businessman John Morgan called from the big blind.
The flop fell J87. Smirnov bet 50,000, Morgan called quickly, and Dwan folded.
The 8 hit the turn. Smirnov bet 200,000. Morgan called instantly. Winstar casino jackpot winners.
Smirnov said Morgan looked very excited on the turn.
The K landed on the river, and Smirnov bet 700,000, which was more than the pot of 600,000. Morgan thought about it briefly and then shoved for about 3.4 million total, which was about the size of Smirnov’s stack. Smirnov folded the quads face up.
“For me, it was a very easy fold,” Smirnov said. “If he had two kings before the flop he would have re-raised Dwan, because he’s been active and raising a lot. So, two kings was impossible. Two jacks, in theory, was possible.”
Smirnov said that he thought jacks full of eights wouldn’t have been such a confident shove on the river. “He was like all-in, no problem. Before he had been playing very carefully and tight.”
According to his logic, Morgan would have the 109.
The size of the buy-in was not a factor in the decision, Smirnov said. He added that Morgan seemed visibly upset after the hand, giving more validity to the fold.
“I personally couldn’t have done it,” Galfond said. “I’d lose sleep. But, I think it was a reasonable fold actually. There are definitely very few hands John could have had that weren’t a straight flush. Jacks full was probably the one that made the most sense, other than a straight flush.”
According to Galfond, the table erupted once the quads were shown. Dwan left the table in disbelief.”
Now, a few more tidbits for you:

“When pressed for an answer as to whether he actually had the stone-cold lock, a straight flush, Morgan smiled at first. Then, he paused. Then, he spoke.
“I’m not going to tell anyone,” Morgan said softly. “And the reason I am not going to reveal it is totally out of respect for my opponent.””
2) Smirnov’s reaction, from WSOP.com:
“Later, Smirnov was asked about the remarkable hand and his decision to fold a monster (Writer’s Note: English is not Mr. Smirnov’s first language – his comments to Nolan Dalla are printed verbatim):
“It’s hard for me to explain. It seemed like a very difficult call to make. But for me — I think that my read of the table and when you think about this hand and it’s very easy for me to fold. It was the right play. Sometimes it’s very difficult to fold top pair, but this time I don’t know what he should have. It’s impossible for him to have full house of Kings, impossible full house of Jacks, because he did not re-raise from button (pre-flop). He would have re-raised with Jacks and Kings (pre-flop). If he has full house of sevens, then he’d just call (the river bet). A bluff is impossible because he likes to play in the tournament and he is not a professional. I think I have no chance to win, plus he was so excited on the turn (when he made, what could be a straight flush).”
3) Smirnov’s description of the hand, from ESPN.com:
“Tom Dwan from the button raised 32,000, his regular raise. I’m small blind. Call. The gentlemen [Minnesota businessman John Morgan] in big blind called. After this, 7s-Js-8c on the flop. I [bet] from first position, 50,000. [There was an] instant call from the gentleman, and Tom Dwan folded. Then, the eight of spades [on the turn]. Now it’s 7-8-J of spades and 8 of clubs. I bet approximately 200,000, approximately the pot. This gentleman instantly called and was very excited. [He looked] around like all cameras in the world are looking at our hand. I don’t know why, but it is looking for me like this. After this, the king of spades on the river. I bet 700,000, a little more than pot. I over-bet. Five seconds thinking and he is all-in for 700,000 and 2 million. For me, it’s an easy fold. But I maybe thought for two minutes. For me, in real game for example, [it’s an] easy fold.
“I had physical tells plus technically, if he has two kings, he’d raise before the flop because he is a very straightforward player and Tom Dwan raised from button. Only one hand possible in theory, two jacks, but if he has two jacks, I think first of all, he’d raise Tom before the flop, though that is not 100 percent, plus, he would think more on the river because with kings plus straight flush plus two eights, he has [with jacks] only the fourth-best combination. … He should be thinking more about the pot. He was so excited on turn, the king did not frighten him at all. My over-bet did not frighten him, plus before this, he played very straightforward … very tight. He likes to participate in tournament. He cares not about money. … All together, I think [it’s an] easy fold.
“He was very upset after the hand. I think he had a straight flush, but because he didn’t show the hand, someone else [asked] what he had and he wasn’t happy. Maybe now I’m free-rolling in this tournament.”
4) Description of Morgan’s eventual bust out hand, from 2+2 – doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of guy who only shoves with the nuts.
5) ESPN’s Gary Wise talked to Morgan later:
“Wise: Did you have the straight flush?
Morgan: I had a royal flush!
W: There was no royal flush on the board.
M: I had 7-2 of diamonds.
W: 7-2 of diamonds, huh?
Morgan smiled.
W: What did you have?
M: He made a good fold.”
Now, you can read the massive 2+2 thread, with all of the poker hand range analysis you want, and you can spend all day analyzing the possible hand holdings, frequencies, etc etc etc. If you don’t know the players, as almost none of us do, it’s a moot point to some extent: we’re just guesstimating. But there’s one thing that I didn’t see mentioned at all in that entire thread: Smirnov was relying on his read of Morgan – but there’s a problem when you’re trying to get a read on an amateur. First of all, I’m not saying that Morgan is a fool, or a novice – I have no idea – but he is not a poker professional, and everything I’ve read about him points to him being a businessman who enjoys poker. One problem with non-professionals (can we just call them amateurs?) is that they sometimes misread the strength OF THEIR OWN HAND. Thus, as their opponent, you get a false read: you read supreme strength because your opponent is thinking on a different level from you and thinks his hand is stronger than it is!
I remember a very vivid application of this theory: it was a hand that Doyle Brunson played against Chris Monyemaker (I think it was a big televised cash game) where Doyle made a medium flush, and read Moneymaker for supreme strength. What happened is that Moneymaker had also made a flush – a tiny flush – but thought his hand was stronger than it was! I remember watching it, going, “oh no – you can see this happening – Doyle is reading Moneymaker’s overrating of his own hand!” So Doyle mucked the best hand, based on a twisted read: Moneymaker was clearly relaying strength, because he thought his hand was stronger than it was. Doyle picked up on that and concluded that his hand must not be good.
I think that’s key in discussing this Morgan-Smirnov hand…
I think that JJ is a very likely alternative (alternative to the stone cold nuts, Ts9s straight flush) hand for Morgan. I think that KK is certainly possible, although not as likely, since the Ks was on board. And yes, of course he would be more likely to re-raise preflop with KK, but he also may be trying to trap the uber-aggressive Tom Dwan who had been very active. The KK turn call is a little harder to rationalize. I think that AsTs is certainly a viable holding, and would explain Morgan’s “excitement” on the turn, especially in accordance with the Doyle Brunson story I told above about amateurs mis-evaluting the strength of their own hands. Same with 77.
Finally, note that Morgan and Smirnov hadn’t been playing together for days at this point – they’d only been playing together for a few levels.

Quads Over Quads Poker Poker hands can be ranked in strength from the weakest hand, seven high, to the strongest, a royal flush. Near the top of these rankings, just below a royal flush, and above a full house, is four of a kind, which is also known as “quads.” There are thirteen different cards in the deck for each of the four suits, making thirteen different possible ways to make quads. The four of a kind hands are ranked in strength from quad deuces at the bottom to quad aces at the top.
Quads is a rare and powerful hand to make. When you make quads, you will almost always win the pot regardless of what your opponents make. It is rare enough to hold quads that your opponent may not give you credit when you represent it, especially if they themselves are holding a strong hand, like a full house. If you make quads at the same time that one or more of your opponents also has a strong holding, you may win a very large pot. If you sense that your opponent has a strong holding when you have quads, you probably shouldn’t slowplay the hand, or get too fancy with the betting, or you will likely miss an opportunity to get as many bets as possible into the pot. Save your slowplays for times when it will be harder to get paid off, because you need your opponent to catch up.
On rare occasions, when you have made quads, your opponent may also make a stronger four of a kind or a straight flush. Because it is so rare to lose with quads, this is referred to as a “bad beat.” This can be a wonderful thing, because if the poker room you are playing in offers a bad beat jackpot, this type of bad beat may trigger it, if other conditions are also met. If you take a bad beat which triggers the bad beat jackpot, you stand to win a substantial amount of money, often several thousand dollars. For this reason, poker jackpots have become very popular among players, especially those who have been fortunate enough to participate in them.
In addition to bad beat jackpot, poker rooms frequently offer other promotions which incentivize play. One frequently used promotion id the Monte Carlo board. The Monte Carlo board usually posts every way to make quads and every way to make a straight flush. Next to each possible hand, a corresponding cash bonus is listed. If you make quads or a straight flush, you win the amount posted next to your hand. Each amount is progressive and will increase daily until capped or hit, at which point it will be reset at the minimum amount. Because of statistical variations, some Monte Carlo board hands will go long periods without being hit, while other may hit multiple times in the same day. This promotion can be offered in lieu of a bad beat jackpot or in addition to it, but the funding for it is typically player generated, and taken from the jackpot drop.

If you decide to ’take insurance’ you are betting one half of your original bet that the dealer has an 10 in the hole. If he has this 10, he will have a blackjack and you will lose your original bet (unless you too have a blackjack) but you will win 2 times your insurance bet, so you will in effect break even for that hand.
*Essentially, Blackjack insurance allows the player the option to lessen their wager after the dealer exposes their cards and reveals an Ace card. In this scenario, if the rule is in play, then if the dealer has an Ace then he or she will go around the table asking each player whether or not they want insurance.
*In the case that the dealer doesn’t have blackjack, which I don’t, then take the insurance money, lock that up and then play would continue from there. In the case of a player with a blackjack if the player has a blackjack versus an ace, what you can do, there are two ways to do it. Some casinos will actually require you to pay insurance.
*Many players will also take maximum insurance with a two-card natural hand, rather than risk a push, but this is more disadvantageous in the long run, since the Ten in the player’s blackjack means it is less likely the dealer has blackjack. Question from a Player: My problem is that I have this feeling that I’m taking insurance far too often. I lose this bet a lot, even though I only take insurance when my true count is +3 or more. (I’m playing mostly in six-deck games in Mississippi and Louisiana.)
On my last trip, I put in 19 hours at the tables over a three day period. I kept track of all my insurance bets. I took insurance 14 times, won 5 times and lost 9 times. I realize this is a very short test from the statistical point of view (I’ve been reading your column for years!), but my experience on all of my trips is similar to this. I lose the insurance bet way more than I win it. This is just the one trip where I kept track of my results.
What’s worse, when I win the bet, I don’t really win anything, I just break even on my hand. Winning is actually more like pushing. When I lose the insurance bet, however, I not only lose the insurance, but I still have to play the hand against a dealer ace, which also often loses. I’m starting to think this insurance bet is just a sucker bet for card counters. Blackjack Insurance: A Side Bet, Nothing More
Answer: Many players are confused about the way insurance works because, in casino jargon, you are “insuring your hand.” Insurance is a side bet, and has nothing to do with the results of your blackjack hand.You are simply betting that the dealer has a ten in the hole. If he does, you win 2-to-1. It is not a “push” for your hand.
For example, you have a $100 bet on the table. You have a 16 vs. a dealer ace. Let’s say the insurance bet does not exist. The dealer peeks at his hole card, flips over a ten, and you lose your $100.
Now, assume insurance is offered. You have a true count of +5, so you put out $50 for insurance. Now, when the dealer flips over his ten, he pays your $50 insurance bet at 2-to-1 ($100), but you still lose your hand, so you break even.
Since, without the insurance bet, you would have been minus $100, this $50 bet gained you $100.
The actual result on your blackjack hand will be exactly the same regardless of whether or not you take insurance. If, for example, the dealer has a blackjack, you lose; if not, then you have to play out your hand vs. whatever he does have.
Also, your analysis of your blackjack insurance results indicates that you did pretty close to what you would expect as a card counter. For the sake of simplicity, let’s say all of your insurance bets were $50 each. Since you lost 9 times, this is a $450 loss; since you won 5 times (at 2-to-1), this is a $500 win. So, you’re $50 ahead of where you would have been had you never taken insurance.
Technically, your fourteen $50 insurance bets would total $700 in action. A $50 win total on $700 action would mean that insurance has paid you at the rate of 6.67% — which is more likely a positive fluctuation in your favor than a negative one.
Remember, if you win your insurance bet just half as often as you lose it, you break even. So, it will always seem like you lose this bet more than you win it, even when you are making money on it. ♠

On this page we’ll try to debunk the myths surrounding Blackjack Insurance and Even Money bets and explain why they are considered a sucker bet. These two bets are practically the same, their purpose is to insure yourself against dealer having a blackjack. The only difference is your hand value in each particular situation: if you have a natural (meaning blackjack) then you are offered even money, in all other cases – insurance.Blackjack Insurance
If the dealer’s face up card is an Ace, and you don’t hold a blackjack, then you will be offered to place insurance bet, which can be worth up to half of your original bet. Then, if the dealer reveals a blackjack, you lose your original bet, but paid 2 to 1 on the side bet. That’s the reason why this is called insurance, because it protects you from dealer’s blackjack. 1. First, it’s important to understand that insurance is a side bet, meaning it has no influence on your original wager, which in either case will be completed as usual. Similar to all side bets, it carries higher house edge than the basic game.
2. Second, whether insurance is a good or a bad has nothing to do with the value of your hand. Insurance gives you a chance to protect yourself against a dealer’s blackjack and it makes just as much sense to insure on 17 as it does when you have a hand totaling 20. Whether you win or lose the side bet depends solely on the dealer’s hole card, while your hand wins or loses regardless of whether or not you take the insurance bet.
3. Furthermore, you know the dealer will get blackjack around 4 out of 13 times, which is 31%. Since you’re getting 2-1 odds on insurance, you need to be right 1 out of 3 times. Let’s say that you place a $5 insurance bet 13 times. You will win 4 times earning $40 ($10×4). You will lose 9 times – $45. Final result: minus $5, which means that in the long run, you will lose 7.7% on all your insurance bets. Doesn’t really sound like a smart move.

If the player has blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace, then the player will be offered even money, which means getting paid 1 to 1 on blackjack rather than the usual 3 to 2. If the player doesn’t take even money and the dealer gets blackjack, then we get a tie which results in push. Even money is basically insurance against a push when you have blackjack. Taking this bet guarantees that you will get a payout, but after a quick check, you will find that even money is a horrible bet.Even Money Odds
Let’s analyse both scenarios: First, the dealer is going to push on your blackjack around 31% of the time. The probability of the dealer getting a Ten, Jack, Queen, or King can be counted by seeing how many of these cards are in the shoe. There’s four of each card, meaning there are 16 cards out of the 52 in the deck to give dealer a blackjack. Even with more decks in the shoe, the probability remains pretty much the same, which is a bit less than 31%. (We will ignore those minor differences in order not to complicate things). Thus, your chances of winning and getting a payout of 3 to 2 are 69% of the time (actually a bit more than that).
Let’s take a closer look at the difference in payouts when you take and don’t take even money. If your original bet is $100, then the expected value of taking even money is $100. That’s simple to understand.

Many players make horrible mistakes when they play blackjack. Here’s a list of the 10 worst crimes a player can make.
*The crime: Believing blackjack is all luck.
If you think that all you need is a little bit of “luck” to win at blackjack, I strongly suggest that you stop playing the game. Blackjack is not all luck. The reason? The odds of winning are not the same from one hand to the next because the removal of a card from a deck of cards will affect the odds (sometimes in your favor, other times in the dealer’s favor). It’s true that on individual hands, or even a single playing session, luck can influence the outcome, but in the long term, the player’s skill will overtake luck and a player can win more than he loses, or at the minimum, play almost even with the house.
*The crime: Not using basic strategy.
In was back in 1956 when a group of scientists changed the game of blackjack forever when they statistically determined the absolute correct way to play every hand. This strategy became known as the basic playing strategy and by using this strategy to play every hand, the house edge can be reduced to a minuscule 0.2 to 0.5% (depends on the rules and number of decks). The bottom line is this: blackjack is not a guessing game. If you hold a 10-5 and the dealer shows an 8 upcard, there is one and only one correct play. It doesn’t matter whether you are playing in a Midwest casino, in Las Vegas, or Atlantic City, or whether you just lost five hands in a row, or just won five hands in a row, or whether you are winning a lot or losing or lot, the correct play for this hand is to hit. To be skillful at blackjack means you almost have to be robotic and make the same correct plays according to the basic playing strategy hand after hand after hand. You don’t hit 10-5 against a dealer 8 sometimes and stand othertimes. You always hit. If you can’t or won’t accept this, then you should hang up your playing cards and play a different game because you will never make it at blackjack.
*The crime: Betting on side bets.
Nowadays, casinos have implemented side bets on blackjack tables as a way to increase their revenue because their edge on the game itself is razor thin. These side bets are cheap; usually, it only costs a buck to make them and they come in all different flavors: Pair Square (bet that you will be dealt a pair); Lucky Ladies (bet that you’re initial hand totals 20); Bonus Blackjack (bet that the dealer or player gets a blackjack), and so on. The problem with these side bets is that the house edge is high and although you might get lucky and win a few side bets, in the long run you’ll be donating a lot of money to the casino coffers by making these bets.
*The crime: Using a Progressive Betting System.
The majority of blackjack players use some form of progressive betting which means the player sizes his bet based on whether he won or lost the previous hand. The problem with progressive betting systems is that they don’t change the casino’s edge one iota. The odd of winning the next hand in blackjack isn’t dependent on what happened in previous hands (it is influenced by which cards were removed from the deck). So a player who uses a progressive betting system is deluding himself into thinking he has found the way to beat the house.


*The crime: Playing with a Continuous Shuffling Machine.
A continuous shuffling machine (CSM) is an automatic shuffler that randomly shuffles the cards after each round. Many casinos are replacing the traditional automatic shuffler with CSMs. The reason is because when a CSM is used, the house edge remains virtually the same from one round to the next. When a casino uses a CSM, they can also get roughly 20% more hands dealt per hour vs. a traditional automatic shuffler. The more hands that a recreational player faces per hour, the greater will be the player’s theoretical loss. So playing on a table that uses a CSM is a no-no. You should always play where the dealer is using either a traditional shuffler (where about 70% of the cards are dealt from the shuffler before all the cards are shuffled), or in a single- and two-deck game where the dealer manually shuffles the cards.
*The crime: Playing a single-deck game that pays 6-5 for blackjack
Many casinos have implemented single-deck blackjack games where a player receives only a 6-5 payoff for a blackjack instead of the traditional 3-2 payoff (a 6-5 payoff means on a $10 bet you would get paid $12 for a blackjack instead of $15).These games are really bad news because the 6-5 payoff increases the house edge to roughly 1.4%. It’s a real crime to play any game where the casino pays only 6-5 on blackjacks.
*The crime: Not scouting the tables
The playing rules are not necessarily the same from one table to the next or for that matter from one casino to the next. You shouldn’t just jump into a game without first knowing what the rules are and whether there are better rules on other tables. For example, a table where the dealer hits soft 17 is worst for a player than if the dealer stands on soft 17. Blackjack players should know which rules are player-friendly and which favor the house, and then scout the tables to find the best set of player-friendly rules.
*The crime: Playing when tired or inebriated
How many times have you seen the bleary-eyed player playing blackjack? Or the player that has consumed one to many alcoholic drinks. If you are tired, you shouldn’t be playing blackjack because you will be making too many playing mistakes. Ditto for consuming many alcoholic drinks while playing. Playing blackjack skillfully requires concentration and anything that disturbs your concentration will result in you losing more money (that’s why drinks are free to players).
*The crime: Not paying attention to the cards on the layout
Not too many recreational players pay attention to the cards on the layout. That’s a big mistake. For example, if you have seen a disproportionate number of small cards vs. large cards in the first couple of rounds after a shuffle, now would be a good time to bump up your bet slightly. On the other hand, if you see nothing but aces and faces in the early rounds, you should definitely not increase the size of your bet.
*The crime: Not getting rated
You should always get rated when you play blackjack. The reason? This allows you to receive comps from the casino (free meals, free rooms, free shows, etc.). It cost you nothing to get rated. Just sign up for their player’s card and show it to the dealer every time you play. Your level of comps depends upon your level of play. You can always check with a casino host to find out what kind of comps you will be eligible to receive based on your betting level and the amount of time you play. The comps you receive will lower your cost of playing and sometimes they will turn a negative expectation game (where the house has the overall edge) into a positive expectation game (the game with the comps will result in the player having the monetary edge). The point is that you won’t get any comps unless you get rated, so don’t miss this opportunity to get your share of the billions that casinos give away annually to players just for playing.

*They say roulette is the queen of casino games. Then, blackjack is the king of the casino. Many believe that Blackjack, or 21, or twenty-one is the most popular casino game in the world. Blackjack is also the most researched game ever. It is also the only casino game with fluctuating odds (or probability). The winning chance changes with the composition of the deck. This is more about blackjack mathematics than anything else.
* For gambling is such a mathematical phenomenon that the casinos would do .. you know what to you .. if you knew well about it! This casino game is so easy to win .. but it is NOT about card counting! In truth, card counting at blackjack lopsidedly serves the greedy interests of the casinos.
* The blackjack player is honestly served only by the Fundamental Formula of Gambling (FFG). And thus the casino henchmen will threaten you if you simply write down in a notebook what you lost and what you won. Hey, that’s a tax requirement in any jurisdiction!
Let me start by saying that the game of blackjack has caused me the most serious problems with casinos and gambling developers/authors/system vendors. Blackjack or Twenty-one (seen the movie 21?) is the most popular casino game and the most researched one. There are plenty of books dedicated to the so-called mathematics of blackjack.
There is worthiness in a few of such books or eBooks. For the most part, however, there isn’t much mathematics in all those blackjack studies. The heart of the matter is a worthless concept known as card counting.
I do have a strong interest in blackjack. It is well documented at my website. As a matter of fact, I consider myself the best blackjack player ever. As Muhammad Ali put: ’It ain’t bragging if you back it!’ So, I put the money where my mouth is: I issued a casino gambling challenge, especially at the blackjack tables. So far, nobody has dared to honor my challenge. The real casino challenge is open to any gambler, gambling author, or gambling system developer — card-counting or not.
I wrote a book about the true mathematics of blackjack, insofar as precise probability calculations are concerned. You might be shocked to hear, but the mathematical truth is that your knowledge of blackjack probabilities or odds is dead wrong. Everything you had known was based on guesswork, albeit it educated guesswork.
To this date, the blackjack odds are the same as John Scarne calculated them in the 1950s. The computers were not the commodity they are today. And John Scarne was not a computer programmer! The way he calculated the odds made sense for the first two and three blackjack cards in a round. I quote from his ’Scarne’s New Complete Guide to Gambling’ (pg. 363):
*’We find that the dealer’s first two cards can produce the counts from 2 to 21 in 1,326 ways.’
Indeed, Combinations C (52, 2) = 1,326 two-card blackjack hands (combinations of 52 cards taken 2 at a time). That is the only thing.. half-way mathematically correct! The truly correct method applies the mathematics of combinatorics alright. But instead of the numerical sets known as combinations, we must apply the mathematics of arrangements. The combinations represent boxed arrangements. In this case, C (52, 2) = (52 * 51) / 2 = 1,326. Arrangements A (52, 2) = (52 * 51) = 2,652 — or double the amount of combinations. Hence, we played cute and said half-true for the blackjack combinations case!
In the case of the first 2-card hands, the combinations-generating method greatly simplifies the problem at no additional cost. 10-7 is equivalent to 7-10. The problem comes to life beginning with 3-card hands. A hand like 10-6-7 is not equivalent to 10-7-6: Dealer must stop at 10-7.
*’We’ll discover that we need to know, however, and avoid most of the fractions, if we multiply 1,326 x 169 to get a common multiple of 224,094.’
Now, that’s a big mystery! How did Scarne come up with that 169 factor??? Well, that’s what they call an educated guess, or guesstimation! John Scarne didn’t have a clue, mathematically speaking. He has never explained how he came up with that 169, kind of a new number of the beast! (There are 13 cards in each of the 4 suits in blackjack; 13 to the power of 2 equals 169.. what’s the relation?!)
In order to calculate the probability precisely, we must generate all the elements (blackjack hands) in lexicographical order. Nobody even knows how many hands are possible, as their size varies widely: From two cards to 10 cards (for one deck)! When two or more decks are employed, the blackjack hands can go from two cards to 11 cards.
Of course, there is a lot of blackjack software out there! But all that software belongs to the simulation category! That is, the blackjack hands are dealt randomly. Based on the well-known-by-now Ion Saliu’s Paradox, random generation does not generate all possible combinations, as some elements repeat. So, we can never calculate the probability precisely based on random generation. If there are 334,490,044 total possible complete hands in blackjack, only 63% will be unique and 37% will be repeats — if we randomly generate 334,490,044 hands.
I rolled up my sleeves again. I had started years ago a blackjack project to generate all possible hands. It was very difficult. I found the project in the year of grace 2009 and also the code to generate sets from a list (last update: 2014). In this case, the list is a 52-line text file with the values of the blackjack cards, from the four 2’s to the 16 Tens, to the four Aces. That’s a stringent mathematical requirement. The deck of cards must be also ordered lexicographically, if we want to correctly generate all qualified sets in lexicographical order.
I generated blackjack hands as both combinations and arrangements. Then, I opened the output files (text format) and checked as many hands as possible. Yes, computing things are so much better today than just 5 years ago. The generating process is significantly faster. Also, opening large files is much easier today. My text editor of choice is my own MDIEditor And Lotto WE. It opens reasonably fast text files of several megabytes in size. The editor also uses a fixed-width font, which makes reading blackjack hands easier.

Keep this new figure in mind: The odds for a blackjack Dealer’s bust are at least 33%. How can we apply the new programming to determine the bust odds for the blackjack Player? After heated debates in forums in 2014, I simply modified my software. The hit-stand limits can be set by the user. Initially, it was fixed — the ubiquitous hit all 16s and under, stand on all 17s or greater.
The software user can set the hit-limit to any value. The choices are, obviously, from 12 to 16. I tried, for example, the hit limit to 11 — that is, hit anything 11 or under, stand on anything 12 or higher. Evidently, there is no bust in such situations. That’s another proof that my programming is 100% correct.
I believe that setting the hit limit to 14 or 13 reflects pretty closely the bust odds for the Player. That is, stand on 15 or greater (as arrangements):

Now, the house edge goes between something like .3355 * .2248 = 8.3% and something like .3355 * .1978 = 6.6%. It averages out to 7.5%. It is a far cry from the intentionally false house advantage (HA) of 1%, or even .5%! The overwhelming majority of blackjack players lose their bankrolls quickly, because this is NOT a 50-50 game or so much close to that margin! And always be mindful that blackjack is strongly sequential: The Dealer always plays the last hand. Otherwise, the casinos would go bankrupt!
I have seen lots of search strings in the statistics of my website related to the probability to get a blackjack (natural). This time the request was personal and directed to me:
*“In the game of blackjack determine the probability of dealing yourself a blackjack (ace face-card or ten) from a single deck. Show how you arrived at your answer. If you are not sure post an idea to get us started!”
* Oh, yes, I am very sure! As specified in this eBook, the blackjack hands can be viewed as combinations or arrangements (the order of the elements counts; like in horse racing trifectas).
1) Let’s take first the combinations. There are 52 cards in one deck. There are 4 Aces and 16 face-cards and 10s. The blackjack (or natural) can occur only in the first 2 cards. We calculate first all combinations of 52 elements taken 2 at a time: C(52, 2) = (52 * 51) / 2 = 1326.
We combine now each of the 4 Aces with each of the 16 ten-valued cards: 4 * 16 = 64. Free slots queen of egypt.

2) Let’s do now the calculations for arrangements. (The combinations are also considered boxed arrangements; i.e. the order of the elements does not count).

In arrangements, the order of the cards is essential: King + Ace is distinct from Ace + King. Thus, total arrangements of 4 Aces and 16 ten-valued cards: 4 * 16 * 2 = 1

Got a bunch more 2015 draft signings to pass along, including details on most of the players selected by the Yankees in the top ten rounds, the rounds tied to the all-important bonus pool. 2015 MLB draft winners, losers: Astros, Dodgers score big. A top prep right-hander whose agreed-upon signing bonus became impossible to pay once Houston lost the bonus pool money associated. Terms of the contracts were not announced, but MLB.com reported that Loftin received a $3 million signing bonus — above the slot value of the 32nd pick ($2.26 million). First off, I want to say that Matt is SO excited and grateful for the Dodgers’ giving him a chance to chase his dream and continue to play baseball. He could not be happier. And I couldn’t be happier for him and to be a part of this journey.
However, this blog is to give a little insight on how this process works. The draft process is not something most people want to go through. And now, being a “professional baseball player” is not all sunshine and iced tea.
Let’s start with the draft process. Matt started filling out questionnaires and being in contact with scouts as early as the Fall 2014 semester. Things really started to pick up once the 2015 season started. He filled out 25 of the 30 MLB team questionnaires. He started getting calls from scouts in April all the way up until about a week before the draft. The scouts wanting to know if ‘X’ amount of money would satisfy him.
So let’s talk about how the draft-signing bonus works.
All fifteen teams that Matt talked to on the phone pre-draft told him that he was no doubt a Top 10 round pick. Well, he ended up going in the 12th round. Which is still great but not what he had been thinking since April.

The amounts are set because teams cannot go over their total signing bonus pool. If teams go over the allotted bonus pool amount, they have to pay a luxury tax depending on how much the team goes over.
The Dodgers total signing bonus pool for 2015 was $7,781,700…meaning they could not over that total amount for their Top 10 selections. After the Top 10 rounds, each draftee can sign for up to $100K, and if a selection in rounds 11-40 are given more than $100K, the overage amount is deducted from the total bonus pool amount for the Top 10 rounds. Sounds easy enough, right?
Wrong. The reality is that college juniors, high schoolers and other draft eligible kids that are not college seniors are offered insane amounts of money. Why? So, they will sign to go play pro ball and not go to college or go back to school. Which is fine. I understand that reasoning.
What I don’t understand is how any high school ball player is worth $6.2 million dollars. Brendan Rodgers, the third pick in the draft this year, just graduated high school and is slotted at that amount of money, meaning he got that if not more trying to get him signed. What has he proved?! That he can play on the USA high school team and compete against other talented high school players. Okay, well you have other college players that have been doing that on the collegiate level for three or four years. And that is why two college juniors were taken over him in the draft. But still does not explain why a majority of the top picks are high school players.

As LeBron James said after Game 3 of the NBA Finals, “Experience is the best teacher.”

What happens is college seniors get the low end. Teams know they can offer seniors basically nothing because seniors have no leverage. Seniors can’t say, “Well, that is not enough money for me, so either give me more money or I’ll go to school.” Seniors are the escape for the clubs to escape going over that total signing bonus pool.
A scout told Matt that he was going to be offered a $1,000 signing bonus. Now, it was never about the money to Matt (he would play for nothing), but CMON! That’s ridiculous. You’re going to offer a .382 BA, 12 HR, 76 RBI, First Team All-OVC, All-American senior that has had four years of collegiate and three summers of wood-bat league experience ONE-THOUSAND DOLLARS to come play in your organization. I HAVE MORE THAN THAT IN MY SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Heck, I could have paid him double than that to not go play and just stay with me. HAHA (He would never do that, and I would never offer that; BUT I think you get my point.)
So, what I am trying to say is that the draft and the MLB is a business. It’s a business game in all reality. Who can teams sign for little to no money, so they can offer another higher prospect more money and not go over the total signing pool. But that’s just like everything else in life I guess.
Another fact: Matt was called three different times during last year’s draft. The same scout telling him that team was about to draft him. They never did. You can’t do that to a kid. It hurts me to think about how many dreams were crushed this year like Matt’s were last year. Now, Matt is in a much better position. And that was a blessing in disguise. And Matt’s signing bonus wise, he got a pretty good deal for a senior.
I just have a feeling Matt was one of the lucky seniors.

Draft Day(s): On day two of the draft, the phone calls started early. Matt was talking to five different teams that were giving him offers and telling him they wanted to take him around rounds 5-10. The scouts said they would be back in touch closer to time. Only one team called back.
Matt didn’t want to turn teams down because what if that came back to bite him in the butt? He didn’t want to over negotiate himself because what if that scared teams away? He had been told that as a senior going in the Top 10 rounds was the best way to be a high prospect in the organizations eyes. But what if going in the Top 10 rounds was not the best deal? (Btw, it wasn’t.)
Matt liked the Dodgers offer the best and made that known to other teams. Everyone was so tense during those days because we just really did not know what the best way to handle the whole situation was. Matt was afraid that a team was just going to draft him without calling and making a offer because that has happened to his teammates in the past. Luckily, we did not have to wait long on day three of the draft to hear Matt’s name. And honestly, we had no idea the Dodgers’ were about to draft him. He had not talked to that scout that day. It just happened to all work out perfectly despite all the toss-ups.
So, what’s next? Well, Matt does not unfortunately go straight to LA to play for the Dodgers…sorry, if you were hoping to tune into SportsCenter tonight to see a highlight of him hitting a dinger. Doesn’t work like that. Instead, the Dodgers have seven teams in their minor league system.

Matt and every other player drafted have to work their way up through the system. How long does it take? Depends. Some can get up to the Bigs fairly quickly. Bryce Harper played just 139 games in the minors. But most players are not Bryce Harper.
It’s tough. Really tough. You have to play well. And be playing well at the perfect time. Sometimes someone even has to get hurt for you to get a chance. In some cases, it does not even matter if you are playing well if the next team up doesn’t have spot for you. Then most players do not stay up on the Major League team. They got called up because someone is hurt then get sent back down when that player is finished with rehab.
I recently finished the book Where Nobody Knows Your Name: Life in Minor League Baseball by John Feinstein. Great read, but it put the process into a perspective to me. I knew it was hard to get to the Majors, but reading about real life stories about the struggles these players face put it into another light. Example: John Lindsey played 16 seasons and had spent over half of his adult life playing in minor league systems before making his debut. He got 12 at-bats before he broke his hand, was demoted back to Triple-A and released.
I’m not trying to be negative Nancy and say none of these guys’ dreams will ever come true. Because they will. A fair amount of these guys will get their chance in the Majors eventually. And the truth is most guys just want to make it there, even if it is for a few games.
Matt loves playing baseball. Bottom line. Every one of those guys that got drafted last week love to play baseball. They know what it takes and how tough it is, but they want to fight for it.
This blog was not to tear down the MLB, the draft process or guys that want to play baseball for a living. This post was for people who think it is easy. For people that think getting drafted is about how good you are. For people that think playing baseball for a living is easy. It’s far from easy.
But that’s what makes it special. That’s what makes Matt special in my eyes. To see him go through the draft process three times (including coming out of high school) and still just want to get things going and prove himself. To hear about how difficult it is to get to ‘The Show’ but still wants to grab it by the horns and says I’m ready; lets do this.
There may be an ugly truth to the MLB and the draft but that is the beauty in a successful process.

’The attendant inside shows me the numbers and says, ’Would you like to see what you’ve won?’ he said.
But after waiting several hours, Rosemond and his wife were taken to a large empty room and were seated before casino officials.
’[There was] four of them and two of us, and they’re on one side and we’re on the other side,’ Rosemond said. ’We don’t know what to expect.’
The mood got less festive when the casino told Rosemond there would be no $11 million prize coming his way.
’He says, ’OK, your machine malfunctioned, so we can’t pay you,’ Rosemond recalled.
Rosemond failed to spot a tiny warning label on the WinStar machine: ’Malfunctions void all plays and pays.’
That didn’t stop him from feeling as though the casino should still pay up.
’You shouldn’t have a machine that malfunctions,’ he said. ’It should work, and if it doesn’t, work the casino should stand behind it, because they are taking people’s money away.’
William Thompson, who teaches public administration at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, is an expert in the gambling business. He said while slot machines can malfunction, the casinos owe it to their customers to pay them unless the player is cheating.
Las Vegas slot machines can clear $100,000 a year per machine, he said.
’You pay the player off,’ he said. ’Your machine was wrong. You screwed up. How about a malfunction when the player’s supposed to win and it shows a loss?’
WinStar Casinos, which is owned by the Chickasaw Indian tribe, declined to talk on camera to News 8.
In a written statement, WinStar said, ’Mr. Rosemond is claiming a win bigger than the machine could possibly pay based on the type of machine, the denomination and the wager.’
The tribe said the machine could only pay only $5,000.
Rosemond said WinStar offered him a series of take it or leave it settlements that started out at $800, which he turned down.
They subsequently offered Rosemond $1,199, which is $1 less than the casino would have to report to the IRS. They said he could accept it on the spot or leave with nothing.
’We didn’t know what we could do,’ Rosemond said.
Rosemond said he took the casino’s offer because he felt trapped. He tried to keep the one key piece of evidence from WinStar of his ’malfunctioned’ win—a card given to every WinStar player that tracks their identity and winnings.
However, once he was told he had won big, casino officials confiscated it. Despite asking for the card back, Rosemond left without it after the assistant general manager said the card belonged to the Chickasaw Nation.
’This is duress,’ Thompson said. ’Any signature in those situations is under duress [and] should have no legal standing.’
